【10月10日配信スタート】NHK WORLD-JAPANで小浜市の「八百比丘尼」が紹介されます!

日本に古くから伝わる「妖怪」を入り口に、日本の歴史や文化、知られざる物語を紐解くNHK WORLD-JAPANの番組「YOKAI:Exploring Hidden Japanese Folklore」。
10月10日(土)から配信される今回のエピソードでは、福井県小浜市に伝わる「八百比丘尼(はっぴゃくびくに・やおびくに)」の伝説が紹介されます。
人魚の肉を食べ、不老不死となった「八百比丘尼」
八百比丘尼は、人魚の肉を食べたことで「不老不死」を手に入れたとされる伝説の人物です。
しかし、永遠の命は決して幸福なものではありませんでした。
長い年月を生き続ける中で、大切な人との別れを繰り返し、やがて出家して全国を旅したと伝えられています。
なぜ「不老不死」という、一見すると幸福にも思える力が、悲しい運命として描かれるようになったのでしょうか。
民俗学者が小浜を訪れ、八百比丘尼の謎を紐解く
番組では、民俗学者のマイケル・ディラン・フォスター博士が、八百比丘尼伝説が伝わる小浜市を訪問。
小浜に残る八百比丘尼ゆかりの場所や伝説をたどりながら、「不老不死」が幸福ではなく苦しみとして描かれた背景について、その謎を紐解いていきます。
日本の妖怪や伝説を通して、そこに込められた日本人の死生観や文化にも迫る内容です。

Discover the Mysterious Legend of Yaobikuni in Obama, Fukui, Japan
The latest episode of NHK WORLD-JAPAN’s YOKAI: Exploring Hidden Japanese Folklore explores the legend of Yaobikuni, a mysterious figure associated with Obama City, Fukui Prefecture.
In Obama City, the local pronunciation of Yaobikuni is “Happyakubikuni.”
According to legend, Yaobikuni ate the flesh of a mermaid and gained eternal youth and immortality.
But immortality did not bring her happiness.
After living for many centuries and experiencing the loss of those around her, she is said to have become a Buddhist nun and traveled throughout Japan.
Why was eternal life portrayed not as a blessing, but as a tragic fate?
Exploring the legend of Yaobikuni in Obama
Folklorist Dr. Michael Dylan Foster visits Obama City, where the legend of Yaobikuni has been passed down for generations.
The program explores the places and stories associated with Yaobikuni and examines the cultural ideas behind the fascinating contrast between immortality and suffering.
Through this ancient legend, viewers can discover a unique side of Japanese folklore, history, and traditional views of life and death.
